  • 白宮群英

    白宮群英 (West Wing) 是一套政治電視連續劇,描述一群於美國白宮西翼工作的總統幕僚們的故事。談政治的電視連續劇非常少有,對上一套較著名的,大概要數到80年代英國 BBC 的 Yes Minister。白宮群英打破了當時被 reality show 與醫療肥皂劇 (一種我不明白為甚麼沒有受過醫學訓練的觀眾會喜歡看的劇種) 壟斷的電視版圖,一連播了七季一百五十多集,可算是非常難得。

    我看白宮群英時,正值人生的最低谷:工作上諸事不順、私生活也是極不如意,我甚至連辭職信也遞過了,只差一步就會到宇宙的各個角落去流浪 (可能也不是壞事) 。各位還能在香港看見我,不誇張的說有部分原因是因為這套電視劇。白宮群英講述一個虛構的民主黨總統 Josiah Barlet 的兩屆任期,於第一季1999 年製作時正配合當時的白宮主人民主黨總統克林頓,但很快史上最愚蠢的共和黨總統小布殊當選,為這套電視劇抹上一絲諷刺的色彩。由於是民主黨執政的關係,電視劇總體來說非常知性、自由、和具批判性 (intelligent, liberal and critical) ,頗合本人的政治脾性。然而與可算是犬儒的英國劇 Yes Minister 不同,白宮群英雖然很聰明和常常自我批抨,但仍然處處流露出美國民族性特有的天真樂觀,雖然有著種種的問題和難處、但總還是有著出路和希望。我初看這堆出路和希望,總不免嘲笑那種一廂情願的wishful thinking,但就是這種可能算是幼稚的肓目樂觀,撐起和推動了美國的強大和進步精神;也只有有著這種天真,在現實中才可能會做得成事。

    白宮群英除政治外,還有著長篇戲劇裡必不可少的人物關係。原創者 Aaron Sorkin 於這方面下手很重,除了總統 Barlet 與第一夫人外,劇裡幾乎沒有一個人物的感情生活是順利的。幕僚長 Leo McGarry 在第一季就與結伴數十載的妻子離婚,總統講辭捉刀人 Sam Seaborn 因為加入白宮而與未婚妻解除婚約;最可惜的是在第一至二季中配成一對的黑人上進青年總統私人助理 Charlie Young 與總統最小的女兒 Zoey Barlet 、在第四季因為 Zoey 覺得與 Charlie 一起壓力太大,而選擇與法國一個無行浪子走在一起 (最後這名浪子在 Zoey 的飲品裡下毒,令 Zoey 被恐怖份子綁架)。於 Aaron Sorkin 所描寫的眾多不幸中,最令我感心的,是傳媒總監 Toby Ziegler 與他的前妻眾議員 Andrea (Andy) Wyatt 的故事。在第四季的倒數第三集, Toby Ziegler 帶著快要臨盤懷有一對龍鳳胎的前妻到她每次經過都說很想住進去的屋子,告訴她他已經買下屋子、請求她再次嫁給他。然而 Andy 拒絕了。 Toby 幾經追問,最後問出原因,原來竟是因為自己的性格太 "sad" 。 Toby 諤然,然而他確實沒有任何辦法改變這種天生的性格,只得捶胸頓足,無可奈何。

    TOBY
    All right. Careful stepping out. [helps her get out of the car] There's a street right there. And there you go.

    ANDY
    If someone sees us, they're going to call the police.

    TOBY
    Well... I hadn't actually factored that into the plan, but if you'll just come over here. [leads her to the walkway] And... there you go. Go ahead.

    [Andy takes off the blindfold.]

    ANDY
    You brought me to Jefferson Wyler's house.

    TOBY
    Yeah.

    ANDY
    Why?

    TOBY
    Everytime we drive past you say that it's your dream house.

    [They begin to walk up the walkway.]

    ANDY
    It is.

    TOBY

    And every time the Congressman's had us over, you've said it was your dream house.

    ANDY
    I wasn't lying.

    TOBY
    You told Jeff Wyler that if he ever put it on he market, you wanted to buy it.

    ANDY
    I do.

    TOBY
    Well, as it turns out, he was going to put it on the market, but he's not anymore. 'cause I bought it.

    ANDY
    You bought this house?

    TOBY
    Yeah.

    ANDY
    You bought this house?!

    TOBY
    Yeah, I did.

    ANDY
    How did you afford it?

    TOBY
    Well, I put together some money for the down payment by selling my soul.

    [Toby holds out his hand and Andy places her hand in his. He opens the door and leads her into the house. They walk into the LIVING ROOM where Toby opens the curtains.]

    ANDY
    This is your house now.

    [Andy walks into the DINING ROOM. Toby follows her.]

    TOBY
    Well, as a matter of fact, it'll...

    [Toby walks into the chandelier that is hanging from the roof.]

    TOBY
    ...it'll be your house if... if... if you say yes to this.

    [They walk down a step into the SUN ROOM at the back of the house.]

    TOBY

    Um... will you marry me?

    ANDY
    Oh, Toby, you gotta tell me you didn't buy this house to...

    TOBY
    No, no. I mean...

    ANDY
    I thought you were just moving out of the apartment and wanted a...

    TOBY
    If we could just get back to the original question.

    ANDY
    Can you get the down payment back?

    TOBY
    You're saying no?

    ANDY
    Yeah, Toby. I said no many times. I mean this... is an incredible gesture, but...

    TOBY
    I don't think you've noticed the things I've done to alter the behavior that's troubled you in the past. Giving up what you felt was a bachelor apartment is only the most recent of gestures which included eating salads.

    ANDY
    I have no problem with where we've lived or what you ate. I do, but I don't care that much.

    TOBY

    Then why aren't you remarrying me?

    ANDY
    You don't really want to talk about this, do you?

    TOBY
    Yeah, I do. I thought you were just being cute. I just thought you were making me chase you as a punishment for the first marriage, and that was okay with me.

    ANDY
    I wasn't being cute, no.

    TOBY
    Why?

    ANDY
    You're just too sad for me, Toby.

    TOBY
    What?

    ANDY
    You're too sad for me. You're just sad. You bring the sadness home with you, and you're sad.

    TOBY
    I'm not sad.

    ANDY
    You are. I don't know if anything can change that, but I can't.

    TOBY
    I'm not sad. I take things seriously.

    ANDY
    I take things seriously, too.

    TOBY
    I'm not comparing myself to anyone. I'm saying...

    ANDY
    You're sad, and you're angry, and you're not warm. You take forever to trust someone.

    TOBY
    Well... My father used to kill people for a living, so, generationally, the Zieglers are making lots of progress. I wouldn't worry about the kids.

    ANDY
    I do worry about the kids.

    TOBY
    Don't.

    ANDY
    Because instead of showing them that the world is for them, you're going to be telling them that they have to work hard in school so they can bone up for a life of hopelessness and despair.

    TOBY
    Wouldn't it be ironic if our kids were the only ones who were properly prepared?

    ANDY
    Toby, I'm as serious as a person as you are, and I'm able to see the glass as half full.

    TOBY

    Great! Half full, half empty? Can we at least agree it's not full yet?

    ANDY
    Well, this is what I'm talking about.

    TOBY
    That was a joke!

    ANDY
    You indicated that you wanted to talk about this seriously.

    TOBY
    Did you feel this way when we were married?

    ANDY
    Come on. I...

    TOBY
    I mean, it's not just now?

    ANDY
    Come on. I'm... sorry about all that. I'm only pregnant. Please, I take it all back.

    TOBY
    Really. Hmm. Did you feel this way when we were married? That I was sad?

    ANDY
    No. I'm going to go sit in the car. My ankles are starting to...

    TOBY
    Did my friends feel like that?

    如果無人作伴,我習慣以文字佐膳。在公司常備有沉悶但值得看的書籍,一年下來,竟也讀完不少。有時吃飯前後出差在外,不便攜帶書報,會臨時在附近買本雜誌充數,買的多是軍事又或電腦雜誌等多餘資訊。大概近月多了往外跑,竟然連明報和信報月刊也讀了。明報月刊還是老樣子,信報月刊卻退步了。後者的政經文章還能保持水準,但副刊文字完全不行。今期有說音響的、有談古鈔的,一讀就知這本月刊已經病入膏肓。

    下引歷史學者李歐梵在明報月刊談音樂的文字。大概中國人都喜歡捧明星,副刊編輯總愛讓些學者名人談些與他們的專長毫不相干的事情。不大喜歡談藝術的李歐梵,不過無論如何,他的文字還是比信報月刊的那些人強。

    今年恰好是艾爾加誕生一百五十周年,竟然沒有甚麼紀念活動,甚至連倫敦交響樂團最近在港台巡迴演奏時也沒有選一首艾爾加的作品!可能是倫敦交響樂團新任客席指揮丹尼爾‧哈丁年紀太輕,無法體會艾爾加的心境吧。艾爾加的音樂,是一種輓歌式的音樂,哀悼著愛德華王朝時代的流逝。那是一個溫文爾雅的時代,年輕的英國貴族文人優哉悠哉,最後卻到歐戰(第一次世界大戰)中無端端送死。艾爾加大概沒當過兵,但音樂總有著一鼓壓抑:他的音樂不宜太熱情洋溢,但又必須充滿感情。那是種矜持、保守,但又浪漫得無以復加的英國式浪漫。艾爾加的作品中其中一首我最喜歡的,當然是他的大提班協奏曲。艾爾加這曲顯然是受到歐戰的影響(寫於1917-1919年),而杜珮(Jackqueline du Pre)和巴比羅里的演奏,則已成了經典中的經典。

  • 懷石料理

    會接觸村上龍的小說,是因為他與村上春樹有著同一個性氏。某一天,在公共圖書館的翻譯小說架上找不到未看過的村上春樹,於是便順手取下隔鄰的村上龍。那本書,就是在芥川賞評審上爭論了超過2小時的、村上龍的成名作《接近無限透明的藍》。

    村上龍的書絕不易看。我讀他每一本書,沒有一本不是到了中途某些章節時腦袋就會變得空盪盪水過鴨背式翻過的。然而,讀村上龍的每一本書總會有些段落令你有所啟發。村上龍曾說過,他寫每一本書時都意圖以不同的方式寫作;在我讀過村上龍的小說中,這有相當程度上是真的。

    「懷石料理,一定是由非常憂鬱的人烹調出來的,」由美子邊吃著蝦丸子邊這麼說,「嗯,怎麼說呢??這和大口吃烤牛肉、大口喝啤酒,正好是對立的兩極。心裡有種失落感,明白自己不會有和大夥兒一同喧鬧的心情,那樣的人吧。」

  • 狂歡

    近年與不少師弟妹交談,驚訝的發現不少都不參加迎新營(O'camp),大概經過傳媒渲染、新鮮人都怕了或不齒於某些迎新營的無聊低俗環節吧。不過個人來說,迎新營是大學中最懷念的時刻之一。不是當中有甚麼難忘的經歷,只是一班閃耀著「希望」與「未來」的年青人,聚在一起渡過那四日三夜,那氣氛,絕對是一生一遇。

    香港娛樂事業極度發達,卻嚴重缺乏熱血的Party Song,於是林子祥在八十年代的歌曲,直至廿一世紀仍然是迎新營上必唱的飲歌。當時還是充滿朝氣、滿懷理想的我,不太明白為甚麼迎新營最後一日,大三的大師兄大師姊們一邊唱著林子祥的〈狂歡〉,一邊落淚。2003年,輪到我畢業了,之前求學的十多年一直以為大學就是終點,以為進了大學人生就步上康莊大道,以後自然一切都好。2003年,非典型肺炎肆虐,學校停課,市面蕭條,連政府也全面停止招聘公務員。就讀政治系的我前路茫茫,對「畢業」極度沒有實感 ,回想三年前師兄姊們流下的眼淚,只有感受更深。

    月前有報道稱一名昏迷十多年的波蘭植物人奇蹟蘇醒,一夜間見證滄海桑田,比電影《快樂的謊言》更具戲劇性。假如主角是香港人,在今年七一蘇醒,應驚訝於1980 年的林子祥舊歌《世運在莫斯科》,居然被日前的回歸慶祝節目改成《世運在Beijing》。驚訝原因,不是北京申奧成功,而是改曲顯示的國際文化疏忽症,難在當年出現。

    「成吉思汗樂隊」的文化意涵

    《世》曲並非香港原創,而是來自德國樂隊「成吉思汗」(Dschinghis Khan)。這樂隊以各國獵奇題材為特色,代表作《古都羅馬》、《成吉思汗》等,都曾被林子祥改編。走如此路線,除了迎合七、八十年代的士高熱,也因這樂隊成名於歐洲視野歌唱比賽,開宗明義要以歐洲眼光,介紹他們意想的世界、特別是東方。今天看來,他們舞姿極度騎呢,主音打開胸膛「飾演」大汗,其他成員大跳連大學O' camp 學生也甘拜下風的「舞步」,比《YMCA》的同志樂隊Village People 還要camp。

    Camp 歸camp,成吉思汗樂隊在前蘇聯大行其道,一方面因為他們顛覆傳統的造型,對鐵幕青年具同樣顛覆性,就像英倫組合Pet Shop Boys 的《Go West》,後來成了東歐青年指導歌曲;另一方面,也有賴其首本歌為1980 年莫斯科奧運宣傳,獲蘇聯當局邀請即場獻唱。其實,蘇聯在成吉思汗樂隊歌舞下,已淪為西方的他者;邀請樂隊獻唱,也完成了自我東方化程序。以「北京」取代「莫斯科」,對外國聽眾而言,難免有同樣判斷。

    《牙買加人在紐約》改名藝術

    我們不要上綱上線,也明白台慶化的太平節目,不可能沒有口水歌這必殺技。但改歌曲國名,在國際社會一向十分敏感,這不是教導人學習邱吉爾的幽默、羅斯福的睿智,不能以脫離背景的decontextualized 方式隨便了事。台灣陳昇的《One Night in Beijing》,以featuring 京劇選段為靈魂,就不可能變成「砵蘭街一夜」。其實只要有文化底蘊,歌名輕輕一改,也可成為經典。例如Sting有名曲《Englishman in New York》,講述英國藝術家在紐約大都會的異鄉生活,是探討這命題的經典。後來牙買加樂手Shinehead 將「英國人」改為「牙買加人」(Jamaicanin New York),原有色士風變成加勒比風味,與原曲金句「I an alien, I a legal alien」,依然配合得天衣無縫,更開闢了探討拉美人和美國關係的曲種。

    港版《莫斯科》在林子祥的精彩演繹下,並沒失去原曲的文化神髓,而且還出了一首姊妹曲《狂歡》。《狂歡》並非成吉思汗樂隊出品, 而是源自希伯萊民歌《Hava Nagila》,在猶太社區相當流行,包括俄羅斯的猶太上流圈子。

    杯葛「狂歡化」的莫斯科奧運

    少人留意的是,林子祥的港版《狂歡》結尾配上《莫斯科》主旋律,令兩首背景大異的音樂變成連體,主旨似是帶領冷戰時代的青年人,在世紀末到不可知的秘地狂歡。後來蘇聯入侵阿富汗,西方、中國同時杯葛莫斯科奧運,令比賽極度冷清,這系列歌曲也就多了政治諷刺意味。今日俄羅斯人不當1980 奧運是驕傲,只覺尷尬。當《莫斯科》配上一聲聲「Beijing Beijing」,老了20 年的林子祥身旁,又不知何故有少男組合Sun Boyz 做早操,除了令毛骨悚然的觀眾情願他們合唱《La La 世界》,也教期望08 奧運是驕傲的華人更尷尬。
