Jane Eyre
Jane Eyre is my first Penguin classic. I still remember the price I paid for: £1.99 — it’s in Sterling because I bought it during a very boring English summer camp, from a UK roadside bookstand containing only special priced books. Those were the innocent days, which the alternative to boredom is books. No iPhone, no iPad, not even a PC at home. Grew up in a traditional Anglican school in HK, the movie reminds me what then English meant to me: cold and reserved, and unless you really seek you’d never know the humane warmth beneath. Though long forgotten, it is still the English’s impression to me, and with nostalgia it’s not exactly bad at all!
